Well, I think you're basically looking in the right direction, we just have to take an inter-dimensional step back to see the bigger picture. Since everything in this universe is just the tip of the iceberg, the leaves of the tree but not the tree itself, our genes are connected to way more than what we are aware of. In reality, we can actually be far more closely related to people who are not in our family tree, in this universe, because the bulk of our common genes are within other dimensions. I'm pretty sure this is what Castaneda meant by "Cyclic Beings," when explaining the reason for who fit into a particular nagual's group and who did not.
